I want to introduce you to a concept from Dan Sullivan’s book, The Gap and The Gain—a book I swear by and one that might just change the way you see your business.

  • The Gap: This is where most entrepreneurs get stuck. It’s when you focus on where you should be versus where you are. It’s looking at that $50K goal and feeling defeated because you haven’t hit it yet. It’s seeing every setback, every struggle, and every problem as proof that you’re failing.

  • The Gain: This is where real momentum happens. Instead of focusing on the gap between you and your goal, you look at how far you’ve come. You measure progress backward, not forward.


Instead of thinking:"I should be making $30K months by now."

Flip it to:"I used to struggle to hit $5K a month, and now I’m pushing $20K. That’s massive progress."


Instead of thinking:"I’m exhausted from handling everything myself."

Flip it to:"I’ve built something that allows me to work for myself. That’s the dream I once wished for."


How to Flip Your Thinking When You’re Ready to Quit

When you’re deep in frustration, use The Gain Method to reframe your thoughts.

Here’s how:

  1. Catch the Negative Thought

    The first step is awareness. The next time you catch yourself saying, "I’m tired, this isn’t working," stop and recognize it.

  2. Find Your Gains

    Look at how far you’ve come. What milestones have you already hit? What skills have you built? What setbacks did you overcome?

  3. Celebrate the Small Wins

    Progress is still progress—even if it’s not happening as fast as you want. Every sale, every email subscriber, every repeat customer is proof that you’re moving forward.

  4. Focus on the Next Right Move

    Instead of being overwhelmed by everything, just ask: What’s one small thing I can do today to make progress?
