How to Install and Set Up Shipping Protection on Your Shopify Store
Adding shipping protection to your Shopify store can enhance customer trust and satisfaction by covering potential issues like lost, stolen, or damaged packages. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you install and set up shipping protection using one of the popular shipping protection apps from the Shopify App Store. The process is generally similar across most apps, but here we’ll outline the basic steps.

Step 1: Choose a Shipping Protection App
Before you begin, decide which shipping protection app best suits your needs. Some popular options include:
Choose one based on your preferences, whether it's ease of use, customer service, cost, or features. Check out my blog post post here on the pros and cons of each. As well as which app I use and recommend.
Step 2: Install the App from Shopify App Store
Go to the Shopify App Store: Visit the Shopify App Store and search for the shipping protection app you’ve chosen.
Click "Add App": On the app's page, click on the “Add app” button. This will take you to your Shopify admin to authorize the installation.
Authorize the App: Review the permissions the app requires and click “Install App” to authorize access.
Step 3: Configure Basic Settings
Access the App Dashboard: After installation, go to your Shopify admin dashboard, click on "Apps," and select the newly installed shipping protection app.
Set Up Shipping Protection Options: Customize the settings for the types of protection you want to offer (e.g., protection for lost, damaged, or stolen packages). You can choose whether to make it an opt-in or auto-opt-in option for customers at checkout. Tip: I set mine to appear in check out only, but most apps have an option for the widget to appear in cart as well. In my experience, people tend to remove it more from cart vs checkout, lowering conversions,
Adjust Coverage Settings: Decide the level of coverage and any additional fees. Some apps allow you to retain a percentage of the premium or customize coverage options. Tip: I set mine to .98 minimum per order and then 1.5% of order, which ever is higher. You can experiment on what makes more sense to your website.
Customize the Checkout Experience: Many apps let you personalize how the shipping protection option appears during the checkout process. Adjust the messaging to fit your brand's voice and tone. Tip: Keep it short and to the point. Something like"BY deselecting Shipping Protection, (Your Brand) is not liable for lost, stolen or damaged items. Note: Unless you are suing Shopify Plus, you can't customize checkout, so the app with appear in cart only-- which is better than nothing, but in check out is more ideal.
Step 4: Test the Setup
Run Test Orders: Complete a few test orders to ensure the app is working correctly and that the shipping protection option appears as expected during checkout.
Verify Customer Experience: Check how the shipping protection option looks on both desktop and mobile devices, and ensure that the customer journey is smooth and intuitive.
Test Claims Process: Depending on the app, you might want to run a mock claim to see how the process works. This helps you understand what your customers will experience and ensures everything is set up properly.
Don’t leave your customers out in the cold! Set up shipping protection today and give them peace of mind with every purchase.
Step 5: Monitor and Optimize
Review Reports and Analytics: Most shipping protection apps come with analytics to help you track how often customers are opting in for shipping protection and how it impacts your revenue.
Adjust Settings as Needed: Based on the data and customer feedback, adjust your settings for better performance. This could include changing the placement of the protection option, modifying fees, or improving the claims process.
Communicate with Customers: Make sure to clearly communicate the benefits of shipping protection in your store, newsletters, or post-purchase emails. Educate customers on how they can protect their orders, boosting opt-ins.
Step 6: Provide Ongoing Support
Monitor Claims and Feedback: Regularly check the status of claims and customer feedback. Make sure you’re providing top-notch support if customers need help with their claims.
Keep the App Updated: Ensure your app is always up-to-date with the latest version for the best performance and features.
