International Shipping Made Easy: GlobalPost Services

An In-Depth Guide to GlobalPost Services for Cross-Border Shipping

GlobalPost is a trusted international shipping service provider that offers various solutions for businesses shipping across borders. With a focus on affordability and reliability, GlobalPost is widely used for cross-border shipping, particularly between the US and Canada, but they also serve other international destinations. Here’s an in-depth look at the different GlobalPost services, their costs, pros, and cons.

1. GlobalPostGo (Flat-Rate Service)

Overview: GlobalPostGo is a flat-rate international shipping service designed to simplify cross-border shipping, especially for small parcels. It's particularly useful for eCommerce businesses shipping to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, and works best for orders valued under $200 and weighing less than 2lbs.

Cost:

  • $27.95 flat fee for shipments up to $200 in value and under 2lbs.

  • Taxes and duties are included in the price, making it easier to calculate costs upfront.

Pros:

  • Affordable pricing: This is an affordable shipping option for small, lightweight parcels.

  • Simple and Transparent: With taxes and duties included, there are no surprises, and businesses can plan their shipping costs more effectively.

  • Convenient: Ideal for smaller businesses or occasional shipments, particularly to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong.

  • Fast Delivery: Typically delivers within 6-10 business days, ensuring good shipping speed for international parcels.

Cons:

  • Limited to small, lightweight items: The 2lb weight limit means larger items can’t use this service.

  • Limited destinations: Currently, GlobalPostGo ships only to a select few countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong), limiting its international coverage.

  • No tracking for some destinations: In some regions, tracking information can be less detailed, making it difficult for customers to monitor their shipments.

2. GlobalPost Economy & Standard (Standard International Service)

Overview: GlobalPost Standard is designed for businesses that ship larger parcels internationally. It offers a more traditional international shipping service with a wider range of shipping options for packages of varying sizes and weights. This service works well for eCommerce businesses that need to ship both small and large items internationally. From my research (based on the publish date of this post, the only differences between GlobalPost Economy and GlobalPost Standard is the delivery time, price with Economy being slightly less expensive and taking a bit longer to deliver. The weight limit is 4.4lbs, and up to $400 worth of goods with NO additional coverage for Economy. In my experience, the difference in price is pretty minimal, so I prefer to use Standard International.

Cost:

  • Pricing is based on weight and destination. Shipping costs can vary depending on the package size and where it’s being shipped.

  • Customers are often able to get discounted rates if they ship frequently or in bulk.

Pros:

  • Broad international coverage: Ships to over 190 countries worldwide, giving businesses access to a wide customer base.

  • Versatile service: Works for a variety of parcel sizes and weights, making it more flexible than GlobalPostGo.

  • Reliable tracking: More comprehensive tracking than GlobalPostGo, ensuring both businesses and customers can track their shipments.

Cons:

  • More expensive for larger items: While it’s suitable for larger items than GlobalPostGo, the pricing structure can be high for heavier parcels, especially for smaller businesses with less volume.

  • Customs delays: Some shipments may experience delays due to customs clearance, particularly for countries with stricter import/export regulations.

  • Inconsistent delivery times: Delivery times can vary greatly depending on the destination and the country’s shipping infrastructure.

3. GlobalPost Global Returns (Returns Service)

Overview: GlobalPost Global Returns is a service that allows businesses to manage returns efficiently. This service is designed to make international returns simpler and more cost-effective by streamlining the process of receiving goods back from international customers.

Cost:

  • Pricing depends on the weight and destination of the return package.

  • Additional fees may apply if the return is due to an incorrect delivery or customs issues.

Pros:

  • Simplifies returns: By offering a streamlined returns process, businesses can make international returns hassle-free for customers.

  • Affordable: Return shipping costs are relatively lower compared to other international shipping methods, making it a more cost-effective solution for eCommerce businesses.

  • International Coverage: Ships returns from a wide range of countries, reducing complexity for businesses that sell internationally.

Cons:

  • Return times can vary: Depending on the country of origin and the destination, it may take longer to receive returns, particularly in countries with slower postal systems.

  • Customs challenges: Just like with initial shipments, customs regulations can delay or complicate returns.

  • Limited tracking: Some returns, especially for countries with less infrastructure, may not have as detailed tracking information as businesses would like.

4. GlobalPost Plus (Premium International Shipping Service)

Overview: GlobalPost Plus is an enhanced, premium international shipping service offering faster delivery times, robust tracking, and more reliable customer service for businesses shipping higher volumes or requiring expedited international deliveries. It’s ideal for eCommerce businesses and wholesalers looking for faster, dependable solutions to meet customer expectations.

Cost:

  • Pricing is based on weight, destination, and volume.

  • While GlobalPost Plus is a premium service, businesses that ship large volumes or frequently can access discounted rates.

Pros:

  • Faster delivery: Ideal for businesses needing quicker delivery than the standard service, ensuring customers receive their products faster.

  • Enhanced tracking: Offers detailed tracking from start to finish, providing both businesses and customers with real-time updates.

  • Customs support: Helps expedite customs processing to reduce delays.

  • Dedicated support: Provides access to priority customer service for businesses needing assistance.

Cons:

  • Higher costs: As a premium service, GlobalPost Plus is more expensive than standard services, which may be prohibitive for smaller businesses with lower shipping volumes.

  • Not ideal for small, one-off shipments: This service is better suited for businesses that ship regularly or in bulk, making it less ideal for occasional small parcel shipments.

5. USPS Canada DDP

Overview: The USPS Canada DDP (Delivered Duties Paid) service is specifically designed to make cross-border shipping between the US and Canada easier by covering all applicable duties and taxes upfront. This means customers in Canada won’t be surprised with additional charges upon delivery, enhancing the overall shopping experience.

Cost:

  • Pricing varies depending on the weight, destination, and value of the goods.

  • The cost includes all customs duties, taxes, and fees associated with the shipment.

Pros:

  • Predictable costs: By including duties and taxes in the price, it ensures there are no surprise charges for your Canadian customers upon delivery.

  • Improved customer experience: Customers appreciate the clarity and transparency, making them more likely to complete a purchase.

  • Faster delivery: The DDP service streamlines the customs process, reducing delays and speeding up delivery times.

Cons:

  • Availability: Currently, this service is available for shipments from the US to Canada and may not apply to other international destinations.

  • Limited flexibility: Since the duties and taxes are paid upfront, businesses may not have much flexibility if the customs valuation changes or if goods are returned.

Caveat: Please do yourself a favor and double-check the rates and services, as these programs, names, and stipulations tend to change frequently. Stay informed to avoid any surprises.
