Tips to avoid shipping chaos and what to do when USPS throws you a curveball.
Shipping delays can feel like the universe is plotting against your business — especially when USPS is involved. As handmade sellers, we’ve all been there. You’re juggling hundreds of orders, praying they’ll get out the door on time, but then… disaster strikes. But don’t panic! Here’s what you can do when USPS messes up and how to survive the shipping madness.
The Time 1,800 Subscription Boxes Sat in Limbo…
Imagine this: 1,800 subscription boxes packed, labeled, and neatly stacked for USPS to pick up. They were whisked away on a Friday, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Done, right? Wrong. The weekend came and went, and those boxes didn’t get scanned in until Wednesday. Yep, nearly a week later. I was a wreck, glued to my computer, refreshing the tracking page like it was going to magically solve the problem. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.

Here’s What You Can Do to Avoid That Kind of Nightmare:
Use a Scan Sheet: Always print a scan sheet when shipping multiple orders. It’s a lifesaver because it forces USPS to scan all your packages at once. That way, if they "lose" your packages, you’ve got proof they were picked up.
Schedule a Pickup: Scheduling USPS to pick up your orders is great... until they don't show up. But, you can set it up online and save yourself a trip to the post office. Just make sure you don’t skip this next step.
Call Your Local Postmaster: If USPS skips your pickup or there’s a mix-up, call your postmaster. I’ve had to battle for daily pickups more times than I’d like to admit, and trust me, it helps when they know you mean business.
Escalate to the Postmaster General: If your local postmaster can’t solve it, you can message the Postmaster General directly. I’ve done it before. It’s like the ultimate “Let me speak to your manager” moment, but it works.
The Time 500 Orders Were Marked as Delivered… To My Warehouse?!
Here’s another gem: 500 orders marked “delivered” at my own warehouse instead of picked up. I had a dozen 1-star reviews waiting for me because, let’s face it, I can’t teleport orders across the country. If you’re selling on TikTok, you know they give you two days to ship, and USPS delays don’t mix well with that timeline. It was a total nightmare, and some customers were not happy. Sometimes, we’re at the mercy of USPS — let’s hope and pray this holiday season is smoother for all of us.
